Top Tips for Spring Clearing
Self Storage Etobicoke / Toronto

Self Storage Etobicoke / Toronto

Spring clearing can often sound like an ominous task, especially for us 4-seasoned Canadians. The days become longer, the temperature sneaks above freezing and before we know it spring has sprung and it’s time embrace the coming seasons with a fresh start.

However, spring clearing doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process. With the assistance of self storage you’ll find that reorganizing your home or business can be a much simpler task.

It’s time to wipe off the dust and get started!

Go through each room and make an inventory

Approach each room one at a time start to categorize your items. Categorizes could include:

  • Seasonal items for storage.

  • Recyclables

  • Donations

  • Garbage

Your main goal with each room is to declutter and free up space. Try to make the space effective and have optimal accessibility for the items you’ll need this spring, summer, and even into fall.

Don’t neglect your closet space!

When moving from room to room it’s easy to overlook your closed closets but make certain these aren’t ignored. They will hold many of your seasonal items including winter jackets, sweaters, hats and boots that will need to be put away in storage or donated. This extra space will provide plenty of room for your warmer attire and give you peace of mind.

Pack up the items you categorized room by room

Make up a few boxes and round up all of your seasonal items for storage. All others can be sorted for donation, recycle or garbage so make sure to have a few bags handy. Seasonal items could include heaters, sports equipment (hockey, skis, toboggans), winter clothing, snow tires, comforters, winter mats and more. If you need boxes, tape, tape guns, bubble or stretch wrap for packing up your stuff come into the shop at Storage Centre - we have you covered! Now is also a good time to think about any patio furniture, BBQ accessories and yard items that you have stored over the winter. Make sure to include them in your logistics plan when calculating space for your self storage unit. Once everything is packed up, label each box clearly and move them out of each room to an easily accessible area.

Give each room a deep clean

Now that you’ve run amok in each room sorting, categorizing and placing your items away, it is a great time for a deep clean. Keep an eye out for large accumulations of dust (on top of kitchen cabinets, tables, floors), cobwebs and areas that need to be swept as well. If the weather isn’t terrible you may want to open a window to get some fresh air in while the dust is being stirred around. This stage is also a great time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and take a look at your lightbulbs as well, as they typically attract plenty of dust.

Spring clearing cannot be avoided so it’s best to get it out of the way as soon as possible. It requires several hours of work and planning but with the right strategy it can be made a lot easier and you will feel great once it’s out of the way! Okay, I’m ready for the beach now...

How to Unload a Moving Truck
Storage Centre Etobicoke

Storage Centre Etobicoke

You've packed up your possessions and are making your way to the storage facility where you'll be dropping them off until your new home is ready. You've spent a lot of time and energy packing the boxes and then putting them in the truck. When it comes time to unload them, you'll need to use the same type of care to make sure that your items arrive in your storage unit safe and sound without any damage.

Start with an Assessment

Before unloading the truck walk into your storage unit again and mentally assess the space and where you want things to go. At this point you should also measure any doorways to ensure that larger pieces of furniture will fit.

Make sure that there is a clear path leading from the truck to your unit so that you don't have to maneuver around any obstacles.

Time to Unpack

Do your best to unpack the following items first:

  • Furniture

  • Wardrobe boxes and clothing

  • Fragile items

Furniture should be stored first since it will help determine the layout of the storage unit (it’s easier to pack the smaller items on top of sturdy furniture). Smaller items can then make their way into the storage unit, items packed in small boxes such as clothing, books, etc. can then be inserted into empty spaces below or on top of furniture.

Take the fragile items and put them out of harm's way so they don't get damaged as the bigger items are brought in. These can then be put in near the end to ensure they are not accidently damaged by other items. During the unloading make sure that ties and straps are safely tucked away in the truck so that you don't leave them behind. Any used wrapping should be thrown away as the work continues to keep the site as clean and organized as possible.

While you may be impatient and want to get the job done as quickly as possible, it's best not to rush the process. Take everything one step at a time to make sure that no damage occurs and that your storage area is set up safely. All supplies required are available on-site at Storage Centre as well as moving trucks through our partner’s at U-Haul. Going Abroad for the Summer?

Make the transition out of the dorms easy by renting a storage unit for your college possessions during your trip. At Storage Centre all our units are on the ground floor and easily accessible to allow you to save as much time as possible.

Storage Tips to Consider When Moving out of the Dorms:

  • Unit Size: It’s important to take a quick inventory of everything you will need to put into storage while you are under your parent’s roof or away for the summer. By making a quick checklist of everything you will need to store, you can ensure you get the correct size of storage unit and will not be paying for more space than you need. Need help figuring out what size unit to rent?  Check out our blog for tips!

  • Climate-Controlled Units: This amenity will keep your unit between 55–85°F year-round and the humidity level will be regulated. Many items can be damaged by extreme heat and humidity, such as fabrics, wood furniture, electronics, and books.

  • Short-Term Rental Agreement: Storage Centre only charges you for the time you need storage. All our leases are billed on a 4 week cycle with no long term commitment.

  • Student Discounts: Talk to one of our Storage experts to help you take advantage of your first 8 weeks free rent.

  • Common college items that are easier to keep in self storage than move home:

    • Winter clothing

    • Television or stereo

    • Other furniture

    • Desks

    • Bean bags

    • Bicycles

    • Mini fridges

    • Futons

Aside from the convenience factor, using a storage unit can often be the most affordable solution for moving home after the school year. Some students may have too many belongings to fit in their car and would need a moving truck in order to get everything home. A 5×5 storage unit can be rented for as little as $79/4wks, making it a much more affordable solution than a moving truck rental.

Don’t let stuff stand in the way of celebrating the end of finals week and a summer of fun. Rent a storage unit near campus to make moving out of your dorm simple, and start your summer off in stress-free style.

When it's time to put some of your belongings into a storage unit, you'll want to be sure that they are kept safe and sound. We have put together some tips that you’ll find listed below to help keep the unit contents protected.

1. Choose a Reputable Storage Facility

Make sure that you choose a reputable facility for your storage before signing any type of contract. Go and see the site for yourself and ask questions regarding the security features they provide. When you visit the facility look for a well-maintained and clean building, 24 hour surveillance cameras and friendly, helpful service.

2. Storage Insurance

Anyone that is storing their possessions on-site must have insurance if it's not already adequately covered by their renters’ or homeowners’ insurance policies. At Storage Centre we offer this type of insurance from reliable companies and the payments are simply added to your rental charges.

3. High-Quality Lock

We recommend purchasing a high quality lock for your unit. We offer a wide range of high quality proven brands on-site. Check here for full list of moving and packing supplies available at Storage Centre.

4. Minimize Damage

Using a pallet or a skid keeps your belongings off the floor and out of harm's way. Make sure that your items are well-covered in plastic or cloth sheets to keep them protected from dust. To minimize the risk of damage from falling boxes, choose boxes that are the same size so they are easy to stack, don’t set them too high and use shelving units to help keep them organized.

Check on your belongings regularly to make sure that everything is fine and if you have any questions while you're here be sure to ask one of our helpful employees. We do everything we can to make sure that your precious belongings are kept safe and sound and we can provide you with any of the supplies you may need.
