Whether you’re new to the area or a seasoned local from the neighbourhood, if you’re looking for a moving company recommendation you should consider talking to your self storage provider. At Storage Centre we are always communicating and growing with our customers  from start to finish and throughout the years we have developed an unbiased list of the best-reviewed, go-to moving companies in the area. At the end of the day, whether you take on the move yourself or hire a moving company, your strategy is entirely up to you and what’s best for your situation. However, if you decide to hire, here are some potential benefits in doing so.

It Saves Time

Let’s face it, moving can often be stressful, inconvenient and even unplanned. If you’re looking to save time during the process, hiring an experienced team of movers makes the process quicker and easier to plan around your busy schedule.

Protects Belongings

Professional movers have the experience, equipment and proper materials to pack, store and move large and fragile items safely. An additional benefit is that most movers provide insurance of your goods so in the event that something does break, the cost of replacement is covered.

Avoids Heavy Lifting and Risk of Personal Injury

In the midst of an already often hectic move a muscle strain can really set you back. Moving large, clunky furniture such as a couch or a dining table is not only heavy and potentially dangerous, moving them also requires a team of people with experience and good communication. There are times where it’s better to be safe than to be sorry and this may be one of them, so why not leave it to a crew who has done this many times before?

If you decide that movers are the right decision for you, feel free to reach out and speak to one of our experts directly @ (416) 679-1000 for options and recommendations. For you do-it-yourself movers out there, we have you covered as well. Storage Centre’s location offers a vast array of dollies, pump-trucks, an easily accessible loading dock and onsite U-Haul rentals. Additionally, our blog section has a wealth of information covering tips and tricks ranging from properly packing breakables, to moving couches and everything in between. 5 Signs You Could Benefit From a Self Storage Unit Rental
self storage units rental

Incurring an additional household expense of any sort can be a difficult decision. Ultimately, one must figure out whether that expense brings more overall value to the household than not, which seems simple enough. However, in the case of self-storage unit rentals the decision may not be obvious as many people don’t realize the signs or immediate benefits a rental unit can provide. If you’re on the fence about getting a rental we’ve compiled a handy list of 5 signs you could benefit from a self-storage unit.

When cleaning your house, you move a lot of stuff around

Rather than being able to wipe down surfaces easily, mop or vacuum floors you find yourself having to move many objects to do so. For example, if to clean the entrance of your home you need to move 8 pairs of shoes/boots, temporarily displace your coat rack all the while knocking over a picture frame and tripping over a floor mat you might just benefit from some additional space. In other words, if the process of cleaning your home means moving your belongings from one corner to the next and then back again, some extra space could go a long way in adding peace of mind and simplicity to your life.

When purchasing new furnishings for your home, your number one concern is where to put them

If you’ve ever come across a piece of furniture that works perfectly with your aesthetic and brings you happiness but have no idea where you would put it, this can be an indicator you need some extra space in your house. A home is typically the largest, single-purchase a person will make in their lifetime and because of this, we want it to be unique and tailored to our preferences. If you happen to find the perfect dining set that you know your guests would love but need to dramatically redecorate and reorganize your interior just to make it barely work a self-storage rental unit may be right for you.

Your car no longer fits in your garage

For those amongst us who are lucky enough to have a garage, losing garage space is a common scenario. Losing space is a slow-moving coup that sneaks up until it’s too late. It starts off innocent enough with putting the odd piece here and there, which then expands to building roof racks and side shelves until eventually every time you try to get out of your car, you can barely nudge the door 10’ inches and can no longer squeeze yourself out. At this point, your garage has been overthrown, and it’s too late.

You are tripping over objects in your home

If you find yourself getting tripped up over items or furnishings on a regular occasion it may be time for a well-needed self-storage unit and by we don’t just mean the odd chew toy left on the floor from Lola the Golden Retriever, either. We’re talking about narrow passages due to clutter, tables that stick out, shrinking rooms and overflowing closets.

Seasonal items and hobbies

Canadian living offers the best of the four seasons; however, this wonderful fact also means that we require additional space for seasonal items. Winter fans may need space to store their skis and hockey equipment over the summer while summer fans may need a space to place their bike and softball gear over the winter. All of this, of course, is in addition to the various styles of seasonal clothing needed to live comfortably. The best way to decide whether you require additional space or not is to do an assessment during either the winter or summer months and note the items not in use. If these items take up a large percentage of your space that could be used for other belongings creating a more peaceful, stress-free living experience, then you could benefit from renting a self-storage unit.

What Not to Keep in a Self Storage Unit
Things-not-to-place-in-self-storage.jpg

Storage units are the best solution for your storage needs. When you don't have enough room around the house or personal business to store your items, you'll want to have a secure place to store your belongings. There are, however, certain things that must not be placed in a storage unit and as a guideline, we have listed many of them below for you.

Illegal or Stolen Items

Anything illegal or stolen must not be placed in a storage facility. As well, you must own what you are placing into storage and cannot place anything that is titled to somebody else without permission to do so.

Perishable Food

Perishable food can attract a number of different pests including insects and rodents. Additionally, as the food starts to rot the smell will become overpowering and affect the other items in storage.

Animals

We hope this one is obvious but animals should never be placed in a storage unit even for a small amount of time as it is both cruel and illegal. The unit is dark when not in use, confined and not suitable for any living creature. Plants as well should not be brought in since they can attract pests and are sure to die within a short amount of time.

Flammable Property and Explosive Items

Flammable liquids like oils and fuels or explosive items such as propane tanks, fireworks, firearms and ammunition should never be placed inside the unit. This can lead to a very dangerous situation that puts you, your belongings and other people at risk.

Hazardous Materials

Additionally, you must be cautious of storing products that contain warning labels on them. Not all household or garage items should be automatically assumed as safe to store in self storage. Anything with a corrosive, poisonous, reactive or environmental hazard label cannot be stored. Examples include:

  • Ammonia/bleach
  • Pesticides
  • Insecticides
  • Roofing Tar
  • Paint, paint thinner, paint removers

At Storage Centre we are here to help keep your valuable belongings protected with our self storage solutions in the Etobicoke and Toronto area. How to Unload a Moving Truck
Storage Centre Etobicoke

Storage Centre Etobicoke

You've packed up your possessions and are making your way to the storage facility where you'll be dropping them off until your new home is ready. You've spent a lot of time and energy packing the boxes and then putting them in the truck. When it comes time to unload them, you'll need to use the same type of care to make sure that your items arrive in your storage unit safe and sound without any damage.

Start with an Assessment

Before unloading the truck walk into your storage unit again and mentally assess the space and where you want things to go. At this point you should also measure any doorways to ensure that larger pieces of furniture will fit.

Make sure that there is a clear path leading from the truck to your unit so that you don't have to maneuver around any obstacles.

Time to Unpack

Do your best to unpack the following items first:

  • Furniture

  • Wardrobe boxes and clothing

  • Fragile items

Furniture should be stored first since it will help determine the layout of the storage unit (it’s easier to pack the smaller items on top of sturdy furniture). Smaller items can then make their way into the storage unit, items packed in small boxes such as clothing, books, etc. can then be inserted into empty spaces below or on top of furniture.

Take the fragile items and put them out of harm's way so they don't get damaged as the bigger items are brought in. These can then be put in near the end to ensure they are not accidently damaged by other items. During the unloading make sure that ties and straps are safely tucked away in the truck so that you don't leave them behind. Any used wrapping should be thrown away as the work continues to keep the site as clean and organized as possible.

While you may be impatient and want to get the job done as quickly as possible, it's best not to rush the process. Take everything one step at a time to make sure that no damage occurs and that your storage area is set up safely. All supplies required are available on-site at Storage Centre as well as moving trucks through our partner’s at U-Haul. Going Abroad for the Summer?

Make the transition out of the dorms easy by renting a storage unit for your college possessions during your trip. At Storage Centre all our units are on the ground floor and easily accessible to allow you to save as much time as possible.

Storage Tips to Consider When Moving out of the Dorms:

  • Unit Size: It’s important to take a quick inventory of everything you will need to put into storage while you are under your parent’s roof or away for the summer. By making a quick checklist of everything you will need to store, you can ensure you get the correct size of storage unit and will not be paying for more space than you need. Need help figuring out what size unit to rent?  Check out our blog for tips!

  • Climate-Controlled Units: This amenity will keep your unit between 55–85°F year-round and the humidity level will be regulated. Many items can be damaged by extreme heat and humidity, such as fabrics, wood furniture, electronics, and books.

  • Short-Term Rental Agreement: Storage Centre only charges you for the time you need storage. All our leases are billed on a 4 week cycle with no long term commitment.

  • Student Discounts: Talk to one of our Storage experts to help you take advantage of your first 8 weeks free rent.

  • Common college items that are easier to keep in self storage than move home:

    • Winter clothing

    • Television or stereo

    • Other furniture

    • Desks

    • Bean bags

    • Bicycles

    • Mini fridges

    • Futons

Aside from the convenience factor, using a storage unit can often be the most affordable solution for moving home after the school year. Some students may have too many belongings to fit in their car and would need a moving truck in order to get everything home. A 5×5 storage unit can be rented for as little as $79/4wks, making it a much more affordable solution than a moving truck rental.

Don’t let stuff stand in the way of celebrating the end of finals week and a summer of fun. Rent a storage unit near campus to make moving out of your dorm simple, and start your summer off in stress-free style.

Finding a storage unit to suit your needs is easy! Go to  storage-centre.ca/reserve and reserve a unit online in minutes.
