Ideally, the items placed within your storage unit are well-organized from day one of your move-in date and are then well maintained throughout your stay. However, it doesn’t always work out that way as each situation is different and plans can change and evolve over time. For example:

  • You may be adding more items  into your unit over time as you further optimize and declutter your home.
  • If you are using your unit for storing seasonal items change is inevitable as your unit’s layout will switch between the winter and summer months.
  • Or, perhaps your original need for a unit came unexpectedly with little time to organize it in the first place.

Whatever the reason may be, we’ve provided some strategies on how you can reorganize your storage unit so you can get the most out of your space.

Divide and Conquer

A good start is to place items into 3 categories; donate, remove and store. This may require physically reconfiguring your current setup, but going into the space with that mentality alone will help simplify the initial process. If you have an inventory list from your initial move-in, even better, as you can go through it ahead of time with a game plan already in place before you arrive.

Declutter and Reevaluate Your Current Layout

After the removal and donation process is complete now is a good time to take a fresh look at your current layout. The extra wiggle-room provided will assist you in shuffling things around in a more orderly, accessible fashion. It may even help remind you of what you have stored in your unit in the first place, and if you weren’t able to create an initial inventory list – no worries – now is a great time to make one! Check out our previously written blog here for the best practices when creating your list.

Do a Deep Clean

Now that you’re organized, take some time to eliminate any dust, dirt and debris that may have gathered over time throughout the use of your storage unit. Dirt on the floor may be inevitable as you access your storage space throughout the years with items such as bicycles, winter tires, holiday decorations, sports gear, gardening tools & lawncare equipment, etc. This will help ensure that your belongings continue to be well protected and kept in great condition. Following these guidelines will not only help you stay organized, it will help maximize your space and provide you with the best value.

At any time during the reorganization process should you require drop clothes, plastic coverings, additional boxes or bubble wrap you can find them within the Storage Centre facility by the frontdesk where a storage expert will be happy to assist you.
